Fun Activities to do with your kids on Children's Day

Celebrating Children’s Day: Fun Activities for Kids and Parents

November 14th has always been a special day for me — not just because it’s Children’s Day in India, but because it’s also my mother’s birthday. Growing up, this day felt like a double celebration. With my teachers organizing fun games and events at school, and birthday celebrations for my mom at home, there was a festive energy that filled the air.

Now, as a mother to a beautiful 5-year-old daughter, the significance of this day has deepened even further. I cherish this day with my daughter, celebrating the pure innocence and unfiltered joy she brings to my life. In a world full of responsibilities, challenges, and adult worries, Children’s Day serves as a gentle reminder of what truly matters: the wonder, curiosity, and joy that children bring to everything they do. There’s a child in each one of us, and this Children’s Day, it’s about celebrating the child within — both in our kids and in ourselves.

Edujoy: Celebrating the Joy of Learning and Play

About three months ago, when I started my venture Edujoy, my goal was to celebrate the joy of learning in children, while also keeping my own inner child alive. Through Edujoy, I wanted to create a space where hands-on, creative learning could be fun and engaging for kids, helping them explore the world with curiosity and excitement. It’s this same sense of play and discovery that makes Children’s Day so special — it’s a reminder of how important it is to embrace the joy of being a child

Creating Lasting Memory with your Child with Fun Activities on Children's Day

My daughter is equally excited about Children’s Day and even asked me to make a mermaid card for her — how sweet is that? It got me thinking that this day is not just about celebrating childhood, but about creating lasting memories together. So, in the lead-up to Children’s Day, we decided to try out three fun and exciting activities. They were a huge hit with my daughter and her friends, and I’m sure your little ones will love them too!

1) Invisible Ink Magic

One of the most fun (and secretive) activities you can do with your kids is creating Invisible Ink! It’s simple, requires just a few ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen, and it’s bound to spark curiosity and excitement.

How to do it:

  • Prepare the Invisible Ink Solution: Mix 1 tablespoon of baking powder in a small bowl of water to make a solution.
  • Write the Secret Message: Using a cotton swab or earbud, dip it into the baking powder solution and use it to write a secret message on a piece of thick sketching paper. Let the message dry for about 10-15 minutes. (You can do this step ahead of time so your little one doesn’t see the secret message.)
  • The Mystery Begins: Now, show your child the paper and ask them if they see anything written on it. They won’t see anything — the message will be invisible!
  • Create the Special Ink: Tell them that you have a "magic yellow ink" that will reveal the hidden message. To make this special ink, mix 1 tablespoon of turmeric with a little hand sanitiser in a small bowl. (One of my daughter’s friends even called it “The Haldiram Ink” — how cute is that?) Stir until well combined.
  • Reveal the Secret Message: Use a paintbrush to gently spread the turmeric solution over the entire page. Watch the magic unfold as the areas with the baking powder solution turn red, and the rest of the page stays yellow.
  • Enjoy the Magic: The look of wonder and excitement on your child’s face as the secret message appears is priceless. It’s a moment they won’t forget!

2) Oobleck – The Magical, Non-Newtonian Fluid

Oobleck is one of those activities that never fails to amaze. It’s a substance that behaves like a solid when you apply pressure but flows like a liquid when you let it sit. It's fun, squishy, and colorful — a perfect sensory play experience for kids! Plus, since it uses basic food ingredients, it's completely child-safe.

How to do it:

  • Prepare the Oobleck Mixture: In a large bowl, mix about 2 cups of cornstarch with 1 cup of water. Stir the mixture until it reaches a thick, gooey consistency.
  • Add Color: For extra fun, add a few drops of food coloring to the mixture. We used pink because it’s my daughter’s favorite, but you can get creative with any color your child loves!
  • Let the Fun Begin: Now comes the fun part! Let your kids explore the Oobleck with their hands. They can squeeze it, poke it, or pour it from one container to another. When they press on it, it’ll feel solid, but when they let go, it’ll ooze like a liquid.
Why It's Fun:
Oobleck is both mesmerizing and a great learning experience for kids. It’s an easy way to introduce them to the world of science and materials while also allowing them to explore different textures and sensations. Plus, it’s a great sensory activity that keeps them engaged for hours!
3) Puking Monsters – The Fizzy Fun of Baking Soda and Vinegar

What child doesn’t love a good fizzy, bubbly experiment? Puking Monsters are a hilarious and science-filled way to spend some fun time together. This activity is sure to make your little one giggle with excitement!

How to Do It:

  • Create a monster face on a small container or cup using markers (think googly eyes, sharp teeth, and a silly smile).
  • Fill the container with baking soda (about 2-3 tablespoons).
  • Add a few drops of food coloring to make it even more colorful.
  • Pour vinegar into the container and watch as your monster "pukes" a bubbly, fizzy mess!

Why It's Fun: This activity is not only messy and fun, but it also helps teach kids about chemical reactions. Plus, watching the "puke" overflow out of the monster’s mouth will have everyone laughing in no time.

Celebrating Children’s Day with my daughter has made me realize how precious these moments are. Whether it’s creating a mermaid card, playing with invisible ink, or experimenting with Oobleck, these activities are more than just fun — they’re opportunities to bond, learn, and celebrate the magic of childhood together.

As a mother and the founder of Edujoy, my mission is to foster curiosity, creativity, and hands-on learning in children. And this Children’s Day, I encourage you to embrace the spirit of play and discovery with your little ones. Whether you try one of these activities or come up with your own, the most important thing is to create memories that both you and your children will cherish for years to come.

Wishing you and your family a joyful, magical Children’s Day filled with wonder, laughter, and creativity!
